Scrapple Please?

One of the advantages of traveling as much as we do……

…….. is the opportunity to taste a variety of local foods, and the promise of returning to an area or a restaurant where we’ve had something uniquely delicious on a past trip.  For example, we just returned from Ohio Amish country and, among other things, they are famous for their incredible cheeses and a spread made from peanut butter and marshmallow creme ….pretty good stuff!

I’m not very adventurous when it comes to eating something new, but I do enjoy discovering yummy things….so I usually approach new foods with a mixture of caution and curiosity.  The saying goes “You can’t un-ring a bell” well I propose that you can’t un-taste a food…especially if it’s a yucky one.

Here’s what happened when I discovered Scrapple.  The band and I were in a Pennsylvania restaurant and I saw Scrapple on the menu.  This was the first time I had seen Scrapple on a menu and there was no written description for Scrapple..… I asked the waitress.

Me: “Um…what is Scrapple?”

Waitress (look of horror on her face):  “You don’t want that Hunny.”

Me:  “Okay, I’ll have a turkey sandwich.”

Thus began and ended my opportunity to taste Scrapple.  Since my failed Scrapple flirtation in Pennsylvania I had regretted taking the waitress’ advice and wondered if I should have tried it.  I have researched Scrapple online to prepare myself for a possible return to Pennsylvania for another chance to taste this traditional dish.  Words like: “savory” and “delicious” are used to describe Scrapple, but other descriptive words such as: “offal” and “mush” make me hesitate to take the Scrapple plunge. 

Scrapple looks like Spam.  Does it taste like Spam?  I love Spam, just had some for breakfast today.

So if there are any experienced Scrapple connoisseurs out there reading this blog, please make a comment and let me know if I should try it or not.

    Amish food is delicious (most of it), they don’t waste anything…Mostly it is comfort food.
    We lived in Missouri and there were lots of Amish communities and also in Wisconsin. They are great cooks…I’ve eaten Spam cooked over a campfire and it’s pretty good…It’s a good staple…But I also read an article in the newspaper that the “fat” in a Spam can was used to oil rifles in the war and my husband who was in Vietnam, said also true! OMG! I am from Maryland originally and Scrapple was a “side” dish with breakfast foods…if it’s fried just right, it’s pretty darn good.

    Ha Ha! I guess there is plenty of fat to oil rifles with in Spam!! I always throw that clear gelatinous stuff away before I cook it….is that what they used to oil their rifles?

    I’ve had the “pleasure” several times, mostly as a Georgia Department of Revenue auditor and we’d audit in an area like Pennsylvania or even as far north as Massachusetts. I can’t say that it tastes like Spam, but it does have a distinct taste (not that I enjoyed the “Dirty Jobs” segment of how it’s made. To my surprise and delight, we now have a Mennonite (Amish) restaurant in Seneca, SC called Dienner’s. The more often I have scrapple, especially the way they make it (it even looks the way it does in the above photo), the more I like it. It reminds me in many ways, of sausage with a nice crust and a bit of spice.

    If you like cornbread and sausage you might would like it. When made homemade it doesn’t have all the scrap pig parts in it. I don’t read the label when I eat the store made but love it just the same. It’s great with fried eggs and when it is fried crispy. Live on the edge and try it next time you have the opportunity!

    I looked for it at my grocery store today but no luck….I’ll have to try another store! But I certainly will buy it when I find it!

    There is nothing in the world better than scrapple sliced nice and thin and cooked until it is slghtlly crisp. Just don’t look at the ingredients!!! I live in SC and always bring back several pounds for me and my Maryland neighbors when I go home to MD. Yum, yum.

    i ENJOY reading about all your travels and the people that played with John Denver and the ones that wrote the songs….John’s songs were fun songs to sing at a local jam like “hey it’s good to be back home again ” You are all so gifted and talented……keep on singing and making friends around this world and keeping John’s songs alive…I have many of his original LP”s friend don

    My mom made it all the time. She would boil, in water, with bits of shredded pork and season with a little sage, salt and pepper until done, then stir in an amount of corn meal stirring until thickened. Then she put it in a square cake pan to set up until firm. Then she would slice it into squares and fry in hot skillet with a little fat until browned and crisp on both sides. We had it for breakfast with eggs, etc. So good. Love it.

    HI Anne! I’ve never had scrapple, but my husband loves hoghead cheese…and it is made from the hog head! They say you shouldn’t throw away anything on a hog except the squeal! I got to see Jim on Saturday night in Jacksonville, FL. I had seen both of you at Red Rocks in Denver a few years back. I didn’t realize Jim would be here on Sat night and was so pleased! I really enjoyed the show very much and, just like when I was in Denver, I was moved to tears for many of the songs! Definitely a bright moment in my weekend! I still haven’t had hoghead cheese, it’s also called souse meat, I think. Just can’t…..
