A Room With A View

31 May 2018

It would be silly to complain about our cruise ship job……

…….and we don’t.  Any kind of crybaby whining we could do would ring hollow in the presence of such luxury.  As headline entertainers on Holland America Cruise Line, we are treated the same as passengers; we do not have to do boat drills, traffic control, or in-port manning.  In contrast, the musicians in the band that we work with are considered “crew” so they have ship duties as well as their music job.  They have curfews, restrictions and dress codes…..and the worst part is they are away from their homes and families for months at a time.

We, on the other hand, have the option to take short or long cruises and we have NO crew duties.  The only restrictions we have is that we are not allowed to gamble, but that restriction doesn’t bother us in the least.  We are certainly spoiled rotten and we know it!

The very best thing about being a headline entertainer on Holland America cruise ships is the entertainer’s cabins.  The ship we just were on earlier this month, The Ms Volendam, and her sister ship Ms Amsterdam are our favorite.  The entertainer’s rooms are located in a private hallway, high up near the top of the ship.  The window is very large, and you are just a few steps from an outside deck.  We really love this layout – it’s fantastic!  Yes, when the ocean is rough you can feel it sway – but it’s worth a little sea sickness if you enjoy a good view.

The weather was pretty good earlier this month while we were in Alaska…just a couple of days of rain.  The rest of the time was mostly sunny and the scenery is always stunning…..

I have done some cruises as a decorator and it was a great deal, we were treated as guest and had standard Balcony stateroom, worked just one night a week decorating the Queens Room and got 1/2 price on our drinks – sure do miss those cruises!!

  16. Posted by: Anne

Al Wright: That sounds like a great job! Balcony staterooms? Sweet!

Hi Anne (and Jim ) Just to let you folks know tickets went on sale for your show in Dayton Dec 29th,however they don’t mention you folks being involved. We have our tickets, and looking forward to show and seeing you folks. I’ll give you our ph# when date gets closer. Bill

Thanks for letting us know Bill. I’ll get the info on our website calendar now that they are selling tickets. We are listed under “Special Events” on their website, so maybe since we are not part of the regular season shows they will be marketing our show differently. I found the show right away on the website: http://daytonperformingarts.org/1819/specials/john-denver-rocky-mountain-christmas
